Kōyu, Your Learning Companion

"Kōyu" is a senior thesis project by UI/UX designers Georgina Yustisio and Cassandra Ko. The project centers on an AI-powered mobile app designed to bridge language barriers in academic environments. Key features include real-time subtitles, audio transcription, chapter timestamps, and a multi-language glossary—tools aimed at improving lecture comprehension and fostering greater inclusivity for students.

I was invited by Georgina to contribute to the project, where I was responsible for creating the app’s loading sequence and promotional video—both featuring Kōyu’s mascot, a duck named Koko. For the loading screen, I animated a hand-drawn sequence of Koko running in a loop before leaping to reveal the Kōyu logo beneath its foot. The promotional video combined hand-drawn animation with 2D and 3D elements to introduce the app and its interface in a dynamic and engaging way.
